2,200 LITERS OF KANYANGA DISPOSED OF AND 151 KG OF CANNABIS DESTROYED; RESIDENTS WARNED OF THE DANGERS OF ILLICIT DRUGS
Following the community work (Umuganda) held at the end of March 2026 in Kidakama Cell, Gahunga Sector, 2,200 liters of illicit local brew commonly known as Kanyanga were disposed of, and 151 kilograms of cannabis were destroyed. The substances had been seized during the previous week through collaboration with local residents.
The event was attended by the Mayor of Burera District, Mukamana Soline; Senator Ngarambe Telesphore; the Commander of the Reserve Forces in Burera District, Lt Col Viateur Rudatinya; the District Police Commander, SP Viateur Munyurasi Gakara; some of the members of the District Council; and the Northern Province Police Spokesperson, IP Ngirabakunzi Ignace.
Addressing participants, the Mayor emphasized that Kanyanga, cannabis, and other illicit drugs, as well as substandard alcoholic beverages, significantly contribute to criminal behavior. She noted that users are often driven to commit offenses such as assault, theft, rape, defilement, and various forms of violence due to impaired judgment.
She further highlighted that drug and substance abuse can lead to serious health complications and even death. Additionally, she warned that engaging in such illegal activities results in financial loss, as seized substances are disposed of or destroyed; wasting resources that could otherwise be invested in lawful and productive ventures.
The Mayor urged residents to refrain from transporting, distributing, selling, or consuming drugs, as well as from producing or consuming substandard alcoholic beverages. She called on the community to actively participate in combating these practices by advising those involved to abandon them and reporting persistent offenders to authorities.
The District Police Commander also reminded the public that involvement in drug-related offenses carries severe legal consequences, including imprisonment and fines. He stressed that such activities not only harm individuals but also hinder family welfare and national development.
Under the law, any person who consumes drugs; whether by eating, drinking, injecting, inhaling, or applying them in any form commits an offense. Similarly, producing, cultivating, processing, transporting, storing, distributing, or selling drugs unlawfully constitutes a criminal act.
Moreover, involving a minor in any activity related to drug production, trafficking, or distribution; whether domestically or internationally, is punishable by life imprisonment and a fine ranging between 30 million and 50 million Rwandan francs.
This operation reflects the continued commitment of local authorities and the community to combating drug abuse and promoting public safety and development.
